After a period of time that varies from person to person, the sterling silver jewelry may appear a little darker in colour. This is due to a process called oxidation. Sterling silver is a normally a mixture of 925 parts pure silver and 75 parts copper. The copper is a highly conductive metal and it has a very important role in our body's energy flow. Over time, copper will be slowly brought to the surface of the silver due to a number of reasons including your body's natural chemistry. If you dislike the darker aspect of your sterling silver jewelry you may use the following method to recover the brighter silver appearance:
- Use a jewelry polishing cloth or cleaning solution.
- DO NOT use water with salt to clean your jewelry, it will be corroded and destroyed over time.
Cleansing and programming the jewelry's energy
You may want to neutralize your jewelry's energy and program it for your own personal use just like we do with crystals and gems. For that you may use ONE of the following methods, or any other that works for you. Whatever you do, NEVER USE ANY SOLUTIONS THAT CONTAIN SALT, it will corrode your jewelry.
- Use incence or sacred sage and have the smoke touch your jewelry OR
- Leave your jewelry on a piece of amethyst for one day and one night, preferably during the full moon OR
- Use Reiki energy if you are a practitioner OR
- Rinse your pieces in a non-poluted river or stream.
Also, as you perform the cleansing you may want to repeat positive affirmations in your mind or out loud such as "This ring brings in the light", "This ring helps keep my energies balanced and unaltered" and so forth. It's important to keep your sentences in the present tense. Your thoughts vibrate a certain frequency that should be combined with the jewelry's vibrations.
